Are You Ready To Respond To A
Hazardous Spill?
If you handle industrial liquids like oils, lubricants, fuels, and chemicals,
dealing with spills just goes with the territory. When your forklift driver has
dropped or punctured a drum and the goo is headed for the floor drain, it’s too
late to plan. Get ready for it NOW.
Spills Happen Frequently. More than 40,000 spill incidents are reported each
year. No one knows how many more go unreported. Don’t think it won’t happen in
your plant.
Spills Happen Nearly Anywhere. Leaks come from trucks, storage tanks, drums and
pails in storage and in use, even machinery. Watch out for them at docks,
storage yards, even forklift battery charging stations. In short, anywhere
liquids are used or contained, there’s a potential spill.
Even Small Spills Can Be Dangerous. More than half the reported spill incidents
involved less than 10 gallons. Even a small spill in an enclosed area can be
hazardous to workers, and any spill that reaches your sewer system or
groundwater can be very expensive to clean up.
The Feds Are Watching. DOT regulation 49 CFR 117 and many local ordinances
require you to have a Spill Response Plan. In part, it states that “U.S.
Department of Transportation salvage drums or containers and suitable quantities
of proper absorbent shall be kept available and used in areas where spills,
leaks, or ruptures might occur.”
Where are the accident-prone spots in you plant? Any gutters or floor drains?
Our Model 8DP2115 Drain Plug or Model DS2123 Ultra Drainseal seal off those
drains and prevent a little problem from getting big.
What kinds of liquids? We offer three different absorbent types: UniSorbTM for
almost any type of spill, including acids, caustics, solvents, oils AND
water-based liquids; Oil SorbTM for oils, fuels, lubricants and other
petroleum-based products; and CleanSorbTM for non-aggressive oils, coolants and
other water-based liquids.
How big a spill might occur in each place? Our Model 8SK5USP UniSorbTM kit comes
with universal absorbents, disposal bags, gloves, even goggles, all inside a
UN/DOT approved disposal pail. It handles more tha 5 gallons, and there are
other models to respond to up to 80 gallon spills.
How will you dispose of the used response materials? To handle leaking drums,
you'll want our Model 82616P Steel Salvage Drum or Model 89550 All-Plastic
Salvage Drum. You might want other UN/DOT type packages to dispose of used
sorbents.
